Abstract
The purpose of this study was to develop a cut-off score of CES-D11 for screening for suicide risk in the elderly and to explore suicide risk factors affecting those elderlies. The research data were collected from 394 persons over 65 years old living in Uiseong, Gyeongsangbuk-do. The collected data were analyzed using ROC curve analysis in order to determine a cut-off score of CES-D11 for a suicide risk assessment and using crosstabulation analysis and independent sample t-test to explore factors affecting the rural elderly suicide risk. The major finding of the present study is as follows. First, ROC curve analysis results show that a cut-off score of CES-D11 for a suicide risk assessment is 6. Second, as a result of conducting cross-tabulation analysis and independent sample t-test analysis using dichotomous variables dividing suicide risk group and non-risk group by the 6 points of CES-D11, it was found that the age, education, elders who live alone, bereavement, feeling of loneliness, hopelessness, and life satisfaction are statistically significant factors influencing the suicide risk. These study findings imply that CES-D11 would be a useful screening tool for suicide prevention programs for the elderly in rural areas. The discussion of this study implication is presented.
